Is AI Copywriting Right For Your Business?

We have been interacting with computer programs via a chatbot for a decade or so. These exchanges were often extremely limited (and frankly frustrating) due to the clearly pre-programmed canned responses provided by the chatbot in response to complex human inquiries.

While we were gamely explaining the orange juice incident that left our brand new phone in a vegetative state to the chatbot and receiving a cheerful response that they would be more than happy to add that new video gaming service to our account, the tech world was thankfully hard at work training the next generations of new and improved chatbots.

What Is AI Copywriting?

Open ai, page

The new and improved chatbots were trained on a system known as Natural Language Processing (NLP) that can understand complex human speech patterns allowing it to engage in more realistic conversations. In theory, this would allow the new bots to understand the ramifications of our sad orange juice story and (hopefully) offer a more empathetic and useful response.

In late 2022, OpenAI released Chat GPT-3, its most advanced natural language model, and immediately sparked curiosity, excitement, fear, and outrage throughout the business and art worlds. Unlike earlier AI attempts, Chat GPT-3 could not only hold engaging human-like conversations, it could also provide written responses to human queries.

Early this year, Chat GPT-4 was released, improving the quality of responses slightly and adding context citations allowing users to more easily review the sources used to create the response (more on why this is important later). The latest model produced impressive written responses to natural language queries, and many began to speculate about the potential for AI to replace human copywriters, saving businesses time and money.

AI shouldn’t be viewed as usurping the position of human writers, they are not sentient and though they may appear to think, they are not actually capable of forming complex ideas or expressing the nuanced emotions that humans can. What the new tools can do is help shave time off the overall process, and free up your human team to be more creative.

So, where could you incorporate AI Copywriting into your creative process?

Where Does AI Fit Into The Creative Process?

The AI trend is dominating the current market and there are new tools, apps, and integrations being developed every day.

At this point, the marketplace of AI technology has a tool or app available to solve nearly any writing challenge.

That being said, AI is better suited to performing some tasks over others. Here are a few areas where AI can offer the biggest benefit to your bottom line.

Generate Basic Or Repetitive Copy Faster

There is no question, AI can absolutely produce written passages much faster than human writers.

The quality of the AI’s work differs greatly depending on the task (again, more on this later), but AI can be a big help in powering through big projects made up of repetitive tasks like generating multiple short product descriptions, captions, headlines, labels, and such.

Brainstorm Fresh Ideas

No matter how talented your team of copywriters they are going to run short on fresh ideas, new perspectives, and novel messaging. AI copywriting tools can be used to generate months’ worth of blog post topics in just a few minutes.

AI is a great way to help writers get over the hurdle of writer’s block whether stumped on a particular project or facing an empty content calendar.

Give Your Writing A Professional Shine

Just because AI can generate original content of its own, you don’t have to use it for that purpose. Do you know what you want to say, but lack the formal writing skills to say it professionally?

Simply paste or type your copy into the AI tool and ask the AI tool to summarize your copy, and make it shorter, longer, or more persuasive.

AI does excel at creating a well-written polished copy. Using it to give your writing a professional edge is the perfect way to use this powerful tool to its best advantage while limiting the potential downsides below.

The Limits Of AI Copywriting

Though there is a massive potential upside to adding AI Copywriting tools into your creative toolbox we would be remiss if we didn’t spend some time talking about some of AI’s current limitations.

AI “Hallucinations” Result In False Statements

One of the most troublesome issues that AI NLP models have demonstrated is a propensity to create professional responses that sound authoritative but are completely false.

The developers refer to this activity as “hallucinating” and so far, attempts to stop the hallucinations have been unsuccessful. The problem lies in the fact that as human as the AI sounds, it is not truly human.  It is not actually trying to decipher the most accurate answer to the user’s query.

It is simply locating the resource that seems to be the best match and then taking words it finds there and arranging them into what it interprets as a professional plausible-sounding answer. This doesn’t always equate to a truthful answer.

As of the date of this writing the tech world has essentially thrown in the towel and said they hope that the hallucinations will decrease as the models continue to learn from the data they are fed each day, but there is no way to know if this will happen or not.

So, for now, it is user beware, and you absolutely must have a human fact-check all content written by AI before using it for any professional purpose.

Long-Form Content Is Often Repetitive

AI writing is frequently heavy on style and low on substance. This can be a dangerous combination in the hands of unsavvy or profit-motivated users.

What this means is on first reading AI Copywriting sounds professional and authoritative. Upon closer inspection, it becomes apparent that the same ideas are simply being repeated over and over again with different wording.

Outdated Facts

In addition to the hallucinations mentioned above, it is also important to remember that the NLP models were trained on data that extended through 2021. The models have had very little exposure to data published after 2021.

This means that you need to pay extra close attention to any details that are likely to have changed since 2021. That means date spans, pricing, curriculums, and any other time-sensitive details.

Most of these details will also need to be updated by a human writer.
