Questions

Common questions

How does photo colorization work here?

You upload the black and white scan and note anything you know: hair color, uniform colors, the era, the location. Editors colorize by hand rather than by filter, so those notes are what separate a plausible result from a guess.

What should I upload?

The largest, cleanest scan you have, ideally straight from the original rather than a photo of a print. More detail in the file means more detail in the result.

How much does it cost?

Photo colorization contests start at $2, with the listing fee included in the package price and the rest paid to the winning editor as the prize.

Can damage be repaired at the same time?

Light cleanup often comes with a colorization entry, but for tears, missing areas or heavy fading a photo restoration contest is the right brief.

Do I own the finished image?

Full rights to the winning colorized version transfer to you on award, provided you hold the rights to the original photograph.

More detail

How a photo colorization contest works

A photo colorization contest turns a black and white photograph into a colour image, hand colorized by editors rather than run through a filter. You upload the scan, several editors submit their versions, and pricing starts at $2 with the listing fee included.

Tell them what you know

Hair and eye colour, uniform or dress colours, the decade, the location, the season. Those details are the difference between a plausible family photograph and a guess, and only you have them.

Scan it properly

Scan the original at the highest resolution your scanner offers, flat and uncropped. A photograph of a print loses the detail that colorization depends on. If the photo is also torn or stained, a photo restoration contest is the better brief, and colorization can follow afterwards.

Rights and files

You must hold the rights to any image you upload. Full rights to the winning version transfer to you on award, and you receive the finished file in the formats you need for web and print. Editors are paid the prize on the 1st and the 14th of each month via PayPal.

Timing

Photo work moves quickly and entries often arrive the same day. The 10 day submission window is the guaranteed period for entries, and you can award as soon as one version is right. Extensions cost a small fee per day and are free on Gold and Custom tiers and on Hatchwise Unlimited.
