I think on the Hatchwise interface being able to communicate with the designers is easy…you can say, “I like this design, but if you could do this…” and they'll come back with a new option. By the time that the process is finished, what you started with may not be what you envisioned and it's just so much better.

Questions

Common questions

What is a domain name contest?

You brief the business and the kind of address you want, and writers submit available domains. You rate and comment as entries arrive, then award the one you want and register it yourself.

Is the domain registered for me?

No. The contest produces the idea, not the registration. Check the domain and register it through your own registrar as soon as you award, since availability can change quickly.

How much does it cost?

Domain contests start at $99, with the $49 listing fee included in the package price and the rest paid to the winning writer as the prize. Registration fees at your registrar are separate.

Can I ask for specific extensions?

Yes. Say which extensions you will accept, for example .com only, and whether hyphens, numbers or invented words are acceptable. The narrower the rules, the more usable the entries.

How long does the contest run?

There is a guaranteed 10 day window for entries, and you can award at any time while the contest is active, which is often the sensible move for domains.

More detail

How a domain name contest works

A domain name contest is judged on what you can register today: entrants submit domains that were available when they entered, so you are comparing real options. Packages start at $99 with the $49 listing fee included, and full rights to the winning entry transfer on award.

What you receive

The winning entry is delivered as text, and full rights to it transfer to you when you award. The package price includes the $49 listing fee and the prize for the writer, and there is no cap on how many entries your contest can attract.

Register the winner quickly

The contest produces the idea, not the registration. Availability changes hour by hour, so check and register through your own registrar as soon as you award. State in the brief which extensions you will accept, and whether hyphens, numbers or invented words are allowed, so entries stay usable.

Briefing writers properly

Say what the business or product does, who it is for, the feeling you want, the length you prefer, and any words that are off limits. Add two or three names you like and say why. Writers work fast against a specific brief and vaguely against a vague one.

Availability and trademarks

Entrants often suggest an available domain alongside a name, but Hatchwise does not carry out trademark clearance. Run your own domain search and a trademark check with a qualified professional before you commit money to signage, packaging or advertising.

Timing and guarantees

Award at any time while the contest is running. The 10 day submission window is the guaranteed period for entries to arrive, and extensions after that cost a small fee per day, free on Gold and Custom tiers and on Hatchwise Unlimited. If a contest runs in full, misses your package minimum and you award nobody, the money back guarantee applies within 14 days of the submission period ending.
