The Gulf Oil Company was founded after the Spindletop oil discovery in Texas. In 1901, it sold gasoline in Texas through containers, and from there, everything went up.

Then, in 1910, they were prisoners launching the world’s first water operation.

It was in 1913 that Gulf Oil made a significant stride in its journey, establishing its first gasoline station to dispense its products in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This marked a key milestone in the company’s expansion and its commitment to providing quality products to its customers.

But it was not until 1920 that designs of their logos began to be seen.

Within this time, the merger of J.M. Guffey Petroleum Company, Gulf Pipeline Company and Gulf Refining Companies of Texas occurred, creating a powerful center of knowledge and resources that served Gulf Oil’s future progress.

At that time, the company took advantage of the high interest in the oil market and its rapid evolution to make strategic investments in oil fields, pipelines and refineries.

Around that time they purchased the Barco Oil concession, then selled Texaco and established a presence in the oil field of Venezuela.

In the early 1960s, Gulf Oil made its first significant logo update. This update introduced depth to the design by refining the orange and blue colors and adding a white and gray outline around the circle.

The orange tone became darker, leaning towards a reddish hue, and the blue lettering was adjusted to a more vivid shade, creating a strong contrast.

This logo refresh gave the disc a three-dimensional effect, making it appear bold and dynamic on Gulf Oil’s gas stations, signage, and advertisements.

The logo, boldly displayed on Gulf-sponsored racing vehicles, created a striking visual link to high performance. Although the logo itself did not undergo a major redesign during this period, its presence in motorsports elevated the brand. Gulf Oil was associated with high-quality engineering and speed, which appealed to both consumers and racing fans.

We see that for this year (1964) and until 2019, a new color adjustment has been made to the central circle, now with a less reddish tone and more characteristic of the orange fruit. They also created a better contrast by changing the blue to a more vivid one.

What was most noticeable was the white background behind the letters, making them more legible, while the typography became flatter and rounder. 

In 1984, Gulf Oil merged with Chevron Corporation, creating one of the largest energy corporations in the world. Following the merger, the Gulf brand remained present but began to adopt subtle logo adjustments to reflect its alignment with Chevron.

During this period, the Gulf Oil logo became slightly thicker in font, giving it a bolder appearance and the orange color was adjusted to a brighter shade.

Despite the merger, Gulf Oil’s branding retained its unique identity, with the logo continuing to be recognized as a symbol of trust and quality.

The logo’s adaptability reflected the company’s resilience and ability to maintain a recognizable brand image, even as the energy landscape underwent significant transformations.

Also, speaking of colors, during these years, by 2004, Gulf Oil registered the colors of its racing car, which had already been participating since 1967.

In 2019, Gulf Oil made further refinements to modernize its look. The letters within the logo became thicker, enhancing readability, and the blue outline around the orange disc was made bolder, giving the logo a stronger visual presence.
