The Complete History of The GEICO Logo

Today, we’ll take a step back to learn the history and meaning behind the logo of one of America’s most recognized auto insurance companies and one that has had an exciting evolution. It’s GEICO, short for Government Employee Insurance Company.

GEICO was founded by Leo Goodwin Sr. and his wife, Lillian, in 1936 in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Its name comes from the fact that it was established primarily to provide insurance to federal government employees and their families.

GEICO ranks as the second largest insurance company in the United States, with approximately 30 million insured vehicles and eighteen million auto policies, not to mention the forty thousand employee insurance policies.

It wasn’t until 1950 that they marked their first milestone by insuring one million vehicles, a clear example of how the business would expand.

Another decisive step occurred in the 1990s, when GEICO began implementing a direct-to-consumer sales model, significantly reducing costs and passing the savings on to customers. This change was accompanied by an iconic advertising campaign featuring the curious GEICO Gecko, which became a cultural touchstone.

Today, GEICO remains one of the largest auto insurers in the United States. It is known for its low-cost offerings and extensive advertising campaigns that have featured this same evolution of its logo.

Let’s learn every detail behind its creation!

GEICO Logo trhough the years

1936 – 1962

From the company’s very beginning, we see a mainly typographic logo where the initials GEICO take all the attention. As we can see, it was used in black and white. This wordmark was a bit tilted to the right, and at both ends of the word—GEICO were two gray triangles going in each direction. Above it, we see the words—Government Employees Insurance Company in uppercase letters.

1951 GEICO Logo

1951 – 1969

Nearly twenty years after using the first logo, GEICO introduced an update of the same, with a completely different emblem than what we had seen before. It was rounded with a centralized eagle on a pedestal with the United States flag. Just below this pedestal was a banner with the legend “National Service.” In addition, the logo had seven stars and the company’s full name, Government Employees Insurance Company, in a circular shape.

1969 GEICO Logo

1969 – 1970s

Based on the previous logo, they modified a new logo in which the contours of the circular emblem were reinforced without a circumference. This symbol was accompanied by a modern logo of the words GEICO in capital letters without serif, which was placed below the medallion and outlined in a thin black rectangle. It is worth noting that this logo lasted only one year.

1970 GEICO Logo

1970s – 1978

For its fourth logo, GEICO chose a modest design, unveiling a new visual identity that featured its subsidiaries in all caps. This black-and-white emblem was clean and minimalistic compared to its predecessors. It left the eagle aside and remained with the company for nearly eight years.

Then, in the last rebranding of the logo we can see how only the typographic aspect remains without any other additional detail, with a chalky letter and in medium blue. These initials have been and will continue to be the fundamental element within the design of its logo. Additionally, since 1999, the fun Gecko of GEICO, the mascot, has appeared.

But when this little guy came along, the Martin Agency noticed that people often mispronounced the company name GEICO as “Gecko.

So, during a branding session, they realized that they could take advantage of this prevailing situation.

This led to the birth of a cute animated gecko to run the company, and since then, a lot of successful marketing has been created around it.

We also saw other versions and adaptations of the same current logo in which words were added or the colors were slightly changed to a slightly lighter shade of blue, always trying to maintain the same palette. These logos were unofficial but temporary and used for specific purposes.

GEICO’s logo journey mirrors the company’s evolution from a niche insurer for government employees to a significant player in the auto insurance market.

Over the decades, each rebranding effort has reflected the company’s growth, technological advancements, and creative spirit.

From the classic typographic logos to the playful Gecko character, GEICO has used its branding to stay memorable and relevant.
