By the way, here is a wonderful description of the word Mudita from the www.muditajournal.com (this is not my website): "Mudita is a Pali word that means 'sympathetic joy' or 'happiness at another’s success in life.' In Buddhist teachings, mudita is one of the four Brahma-viharas, or 'highest emotions,' alongside love, compassion, and equanimity. In English we have many words with an opposite meaning — envy, jealousy, compassion, pity — but none for feelings of happiness or even approval at another’s success. The nearest word might be 'pride,' but this is usually restricted to one’s self. Certain elements of mudita are captured in what Branden calls 'psychological visibility' — the positive feelings that result from having one’s true nature understood, from seeing one’s self mirrored in another. Think about how it feels to talk with someone who understands you, who might be pursuing goals similar to your own. Or how it feels even to look at a healthy plant, thriving on sun and soil. These connections to the rest of the world ground us not only in healthy relationships, but in a healthy life. Without them, we are a plant without soil ourselves. Note that, while the word 'mudita' has an Eastern lineage, its full realization lies as much in the tradition of Western individualism, of seeing each person as an end in him- or herself. The term provides an interesting bridge between Eastern and Western values..."

Thank you everyone for all the new and exciting submissions! So sorry for the lag in comments. I just stepped away from my computer for the day. I was at the spa massaging for seven hours. I am going to try to look at everything and make comments over the next couple of hours.

Thank you everyone for your truly AMAZING work. I am heading to bed for the night. I will check the site again in the morning. I should be up by 7AM pacific time. I'm working all day tomorrow and will not be back to check the site again until the evening. I will get back to you with feedback as soon as I possibly can.

Hi guys, Sorry I'm short on time this morning. I overslept and am running off to work. I have gotten a lot of feedback from friends. I will share some more details later on today. One thing: we need to drop the buddha image completely. I've gotten too much negative feedback on using religious symbols. Otherwise, it is super exciting to see all your new work. I promise to leave more detailed feedback this evening (Pacific time). Thanks again! Kathryn

Here are some interesting thoughts from a friend: On thing to think about as you make this decision is which logos print well. With that said, I would avoid the ones with lots of dark bacground because of all the ink they will use. I also would avoid the ones with the meditating guy since that sends a mixed message it seems to me. I like the ones with plants in them, 17801 and 17787, but not the first of 17801 because of the dark background. I prefer the 17787 series best of all and enjoy the italiticized fonts but wonder if they might not be more difficult to read when printed. So I like 17787 best of all because the font will likely be easier to read than the italicizied fonts. I like the 'rest' you mind' etc triad as well. That's it! David"

Here's what my Mother-in-law (artist Bettie Ward) had to say: "the most restful one is 8b for me......as a matter of fact when I looked at it something quiet happened to me. It has some balance that is appealing I guess. The branch is nice but I like the overhanging branch for the protection it provides the best. I like the colorful one (17809) too but it seems like it is kind of loud for you."

Here's what my friend Patricia Pratchett of the Artist Foundation of San Antonio had to say about your submissions: "How exciting, your logo! So I admit I had to google Mudita and I love the meaning. So based on relishing in the good fortune or pleasure of others and this springing like a font from the earth I like the graphics with the tree limbs and sweet delicate little red leaf flowers (the 17887 series). I also like the colors and especially the type face in 17775 & 17768. I also like 17809 but duh it is orange. lol That's a really pretty design but it doesn't have as much meaning for me. Actually I really like #17849. Excellent color choices and nicely designed with the flowers sprouting from infinity. These are my votes. Good luck! xoxo Patricia"

Here is some great feedback from my NY writer/photographer friend Stephany Yantorn: "favorites - 1. Mudita Massage in cherry color/cherry blossom branch cascading overhead. Why? A few reasons - it looks like a part of the body - the inner veins/capillaries/where part of the healing will take place - and that image is unique and stays with you. Also - it is reaching forward. It has movement. It is not a static image. 2. The green and black mudita massage with the spiralling green ivy. Why? It has movement, it is not the typical "new age" bodywork logo, and it is intertwined with nature as well. The spiralling movement also parallels the human body and spirit. 3. The orange and black/multicolored/floral mudita massage logo. Why? The colors are vibrant and move with each other, the logo pulled me in - the colors and design - so even if at first I was not pulled in by the fact that it was for massage, the dynamic design pulled me. Then - it gave me some insight into the creative side of the person who will be doing the bodywork.. That sold me. ***basically - this gift of bodywork and insight you will be giving - should not be shortchanged with a design logo that I could easily find somewhere else. I would not go with something popular or immediately recognizable. Because someone, in my opinion, will glance at it, but not be taken in by it. You want them in the pool. Not looking at it. I hope that helps. I know I was real straight up about it - but I think it may help. I'm so damn proud of you!!! Love and hugs, Stephany"

Someone suggested that I un-score all the logos and just score the top 5. I am going to try to do that & see what happens...
user-image

Okay... That is not going to work... How about... anything with a "5" is in the top five. Everything with a four is very close. Everything with a "3" needs some work but has great potential. Anything with a "2" just is not a match for me and my style. I'm not giving anything a "1" unless it is downright offensive.

Okay... So now I have listed the top 6 designs.

This is in reference to David's comment. "One thing to think about as you make this decision is which logos print well. With that said, I would avoid the ones with lots of dark bacground because of all the ink they will use." Actually the extra light colors are the ones that will pose printing problems. In school it was always stressed to us students to avoid those ultra light colors for that reason. They may get lost when printed, especially when reduced in size for marketing material such as business cards and on letterheads, etc... At least that is what I was taught.

I think I may have thrown everyone off with my cherry blossom comment. I am seeing too many flowers and want to let you know that I am not wanting a flower in the design unless it is a tastefully done accent or something really, really unique. What I liked about the tree idea was the movement of the wandering branch. I liked the cherry blossoms or leaves as accents. What I really like about leaves is their veins and composition. They remind me of the systems of the human body, allude to the ideas of change and movement and also bring up everything that a leaf invokes. I also love peacock feathers because of the reference to the peacock's ability to change poison into medicine. The infinity symbol is probably self-explanatory.

Regarding the printing of light colors vs. logos that require a lot of ink, Jenny B makes a good point about what she learned in design school. Thanks for the information and clarification. My friend David is a non profit guy, not a design guy. :)

Here's some feeedback from a fellow massage therapist: "my top favorite is 17782. why?: the infinity symbol is universal, the branch symbolizes growth, they are powerful and peaceful images and broad enough to give you room to explore your development in massage in whatever direction interests you. the last three images tell me you have an eastern basis for your massage work, which as a potential client, i might turn away from. it might be best to keep the symbols in broad strokes until a client has the chance to experience your work. the format/layout of the second one, 17794, probably works better for business cards and such; but i still like the structure of the first."

I will be working a lot tomorrow, and probably won't be able to give feedback again until tomorrow night. Until then, good luck and good night.
