Let’s start posting with confidence!
The goalposts always seem to be moving for social media. Every year (sometimes, every month), each platform makes some major change that throws all of our carefully planned content for a loop. That’s especially true for social media graphics. As the platforms try to optimize for various mobile devices, it can seem impossible to stay up-to-date on the right image sizes for your social media presence.
Don’t worry — we’ve got you covered. Here is the definitive guide to social media image sizes for 2023.
Page and Profile Images
Let’s start with the basics. Your header image is the perfect place to highlight your current offer, showcase your brand, and add visual interest to your profile. Unfortunately, you have to choose exactly the right image size or your banner could be zoomed in too far or obscured by your profile picture. And you need the correct resolution for profile pix lest you want to be blurry or cropped strangely!
Here are the correct sizes for all the core page images for your social presence.
Cover Photos
Make sure these are medium- to high-resolution (at least 150ppi) to ensure that they look good on screen. Keep important information in the center of the image and avoid crowding your header images with text. Simpler is better!
Facebook Page: On desktop, the header will be 820 by 312 pixels, but on mobile, this is re-proportioned to 640 by 360. We recommend choosing an image that best suits your target audience and how they visit your page, then make sure that no crucial information is cropped out in either view. If you opt for a cover video, re-size it to 820 by 462 pixels and limit it to 20-90 seconds.
Facebook Event: Your event banner image should be 1200 by 628 pixels.
LinkedIn Profile: Your cover image should be 1584 by 396 pixels. Note that your profile picture will partially obscure the bottom left corner.
Twitter Profile: Both individual and business profiles have banners of 1500 x 500 pixels.
LinkedIn Business Page: When choosing a header image for your company page, keep it at 1128 by 191 pix. As with individual profiles, the bottom left corner will be obscured.
YouTube Channel: Great cover art is a huge selling point on YouTube, and they give you plenty of screen real estate. Choose a splashy image that is 2560 by 1440 pixels.
Profile Pictures
Whether you’re including an actual photo of yourself or a logo, make your profile picture clean and sharp. Remember, it will often appear very small, so choose an image with a solid or clear background and minimal visual clutter. Here are the recommended image sizes for each platform:
Facebook Profile Picture: Facebook will show your profile pic as 170 by 170 pixels on desktop, 128 by 128 on mobile.
LinkedIn Profile Picture: LinkedIn profile pictures are generally 400 by 400 pixels. We recommend using a headshot or logo.
Twitter Profile Picture: Like LinkedIn, Twitter profile pictures should be 400 by 400 pixels.
Instagram Profile Picture: These should be 320 by 320 pixels. Remember that this image will appear in the Stories feed, so make it clearly recognizable and attractive!
TikTok Profile Picture: Keep this small: only 200 by 200 pixels.
Post Images
The wrong image size for your post can mean that your content doesn’t appear properly on the platform. Follow these guidelines to help your feed look its best!
Static Images
Facebook Feed Posts: We recommend uploading images of 1200 by 630 pixels. Don’t be afraid to upload high-res images, but note that Facebook will compress them, so you won’t be able to download them and re-use them at their full size.
Facebook Stories: Keep your stories large and tall: 1080 by 1920 pixels. Leave a buffer around the edge so that the react bar doesn’t obscure your content.
LinkedIn Feed Posts: Any images you include in your posts or shared links should be 1200 by 627 pixels.
Tweets: Take full advantage of Twitter’s horizontal space. The recommended image size for tweets is 1024 by 512 pixels.
Instagram Feed Posts: Instagram will show landscape, portrait, and square images in the proper proportions. However, note that most users expect to see square images. The recommended width is always 1080 pixels. For landscape images, cap the height at 566 pixels; for portrait, 1350 pixels.
Instagram Stories: Make your pre-designed images and any photos for your Stories 1080 pixels by 1920 pixels. Instagram recommends a 14% buffer at the top and bottom to allow room for the profile picture and reaction bar.
Pinterest: You’ve got some leeway on this platform, but most images should be 1000 pixels wide. Aim for a standard height of 1500 pixels. Pinterest does accept images up to 3000 pixels (e.g. infographics), but be aware there may be cropped in the feed.
Videos
YouTube Videos: Most videos should be sized at 1280 by 720 pixels with an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 640 by 480 with a 4:3 ratio. If your video has a different aspect ratio, YouTube will resize it for the player. Whenever possible, upload 1080p HD-quality videos.
Facebook Video Stories: Your video must be at least 500 pixels wide and have an aspect ratio between 9:16 and 1.91:1. There is a maximum length of 15 seconds.
TikTok Videos: We recommend videos that are 1080 by 1920 pixels with an aspect ratio of 1:1 to 9:16.
Ads
Social media ads are an excellent way to drive traffic to your business — and images are always more compelling than words. Here are the sizes you need for your image ads.
Facebook Feed, Messenger, and Marketplace Ads: There are generally 1080 by 1080 pixels, but be sure your files aren’t too big — the max size is 30MB.
LinkedIn Spotlight Ads: These comprise a logo, which should be 100 by 100 pixels, and a background image, which should be 300 by 250 pixels.
LinkedIn Sponsored Content: Choose images that are 1200 by 627 pixels.
On the other platforms, the ads or sponsored content generally follows the same parameters as unpaid posts.
Wrapping Up
There you have it! By using the correct dimensions and formats of your social media images, you can improve your content’s likelihood of being seen and engaged with. Remember to always check your images after you post as well — just in case. Happy posting!
