Famous Logos From Massachusetts

As one of the original American colonies, Massachusetts is steeped in history. The state has also seen several economic evolutions over time.  Originally a center of the agricultural and fishing industries, Massachusetts became a US manufacturing hub during the Industrial Revolution before transforming once again to become a center for academia, technology, and service. With such a varied past it is no wonder Massachusetts delivers some of the county’s best logos. 

Baskin-Robbins

When Baskin-Robbins ice cream shops were first launched in 1953, the selection of 31 different ice cream flavors available in one location was unheard of. Baskin-Robbins made this unique distinction a central part of its brand identity by featuring the number “31” prominently in its logo. 

The original design featured the number “31” emblazoned in a pink circle above the brand’s “BASKIN ROBBINS” wordmark from 1947 all the way through 1991 when it was given a more modern makeover. Still, the “31” remained prominent, this time shown in a stylized pink scripted font beside a blue bold Serif  “Baskin Robbins”. The current design style began to take shape in 2006 with the addition of a stylized custom monogram in blue and pink alongside the word mark “baskin robbins” in the same blue child-like custom lettering. Hidden within the “BR” monogram are the numerals “31”. This same clever design has carried forward, though it was given another style makeover in 2022. The monogram now appears in an ultra-bold old-fashioned Serif font designed in brown and pink with the numerals “31” hidden inside. The wordmark “BASKIN ROBBINS” appears below in a much smaller, brown, simple Sans Serif font.

Welch's

Welch's is a Massachusetts-based company owned by the National Grape Cooperative Association since 1956. The company produces a full range of food and beverage products crafted from the Concord grape.  Though the Welch’s company dates back to the late 1800s, most consumers recognize it best under its current ownership and branding. Welch’s logo has remained fairly stable, undergoing only small design changes since it has been under co-op ownership. The brand logo features a simple Serif typeface wordmark, “Welch’s” in either a bold white on a purple background or a bold purple against a white background. The font and style have evolved slightly over the years, gaining a softer and more scripted appearance that has occasionally been accented by illustrations such as a ribbon and large fruit basket from 1996 to 2007, and the current stylized ribbon that the logo has sported since 2013. 

Berkshire Hathaway

Berkshire Hathaway, owned by famous investor Warren Buffet, is a large investment, and insurance firm with a vested interest in many aspects of the financial world. The company has operated and continues to work through a number of different subsidiaries, however, the core brand itself has remained remarkably unchanged since 1939. 

The Berkshire Hathaway logo has always been a simple typeface design featuring the brand’s wordmark “BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY” rendered in Times New Roman Serif font. The first letter of each word is presented in bold, and the entire logo is rendered in rich Navy Blue against a white background. From the traditional font to the confident, reassuring color palette the Berkshire Hathaway logo is a true reflection of the brand’s values and longstanding reputation as a stable force in a constantly shifting industry.
