Maine’s companies sprang up in an interesting range of niches. Many focus on the outdoors, which makes sense for an oceanside state with harsh winters. Tom’s of Maine It’s hard to think of Maine brands without Tom’s of Maine coming to mind. This company’s hometown allegiance is built right into the name. Tom’s of Maine was founded in 1970 by Tom and Kate Chappell, who moved to Maine for a slower, more natural lifestyle.

This back-to-earth sensibility is apparent in their round logo, which resembles an old-fashioned stamp. Tom’s uses a script-inspired serif font with graceful curves and thick upstrokes. Semicircles span the top and bottom of the logo, creating a circular appearance.

Serif font is used for “Of Maine” at the bottom of the circle, and “Since 1970” at the top. The entire design is angled up around 15 degrees, giving the logo a jaunty, almost irreverent feel.

L.L. Bean L.L. Bean is a clothing and outdoor equipment that began in 1912 when Leon Leonwood Bean began selling his now-iconic hunting equipment. The company is a beloved Maine institution thanks to its philanthropy, love of the outdoors, and well-made products.

The Mexicali Blues logo features the brand name in a slab serif font. A hand-drawn sun separates the two words and creates an informal feel. The logo is long, with all the elements laid out horizontally. The sun in the center of the logo easily represents a sunrise or sunset. To emphasize the brand’s global aesthetic, the final two letters are replaced with a script visually similar to the Sanskrit symbol for “om.” The logo is blue as another callback to the brand’s name.
