Kimp versus Hatchwise
Which one should you choose?

Founded in 2008, Hatchwise is a design and naming contest platform featuring thousands of talented creatives. They also offer clients the option to connect with designers and copywriters who suit their needs. From logo creation to web design to business cards and T-shirts, businesses can get just about anything designed for their brand. Hatchwise also offers naming contests for businesses, teams, products, etc. The design contest format essentially crowdsources talent to offer multiple choices for your design or name.

Kimp launched in 2019 as a subscription-based graphic design service with the goal of helping businesses save time and money on hiring designers. They have since expanded to provide video design as well. Clients can choose from a graphics-only subscription, video-only, or both. Kimp does not offer any sort of design contest. Rather, customers pay a monthly fee to get their design projects done.

The Design Contest Process
1. How it Works

A design contest is a way to outsource creative work without needing to pre-vet and hire designers. Instead, designers compete to have you choose their concept.
You pay one simple fee to cover the prize money and Hatchwise’s fees. Then, you post your creative brief. You’ll get multiple options, which is ideal if you’re not quite sure which style you want. You can request tweaks to any of the concepts while the contest is running (which can go from 48 hours to 10 days). Once you’ve awarded a winner, the final design is yours to keep, and the winning designer gets the prize.
Here’s how a typical design contest runs:
- Set up your contest and select your price. The more you pay, the more options you’ll get. Higher-tier contests attract more designers and more high-quality concepts to choose from.
- Select any upgrades, if you desire. These include options to make your contest private, featured or highlighted, or rush (48 hours).
- Wait for pre-vetted creatives to submit concepts for your consideration. Most contests run up to 10 days, but you may be able to extend it for a fee — or close it sooner if you find a winner!
- Choose your winning design, and you’ll receive the final files within hours!
Design contests are an excellent way to get high-quality designs at a reasonable price. And because you choose the concepts and the final winner, you’re less likely to end up paying for a design you don’t like.

To get started with Kimp, you pay a monthly subscription fee. This puts you in touch with Kimp’s designers. You place a request for the design you want (a logo, flyer, etc.) and they’ll start to work on it. Revisions are included, and you can have up to 2 active projects at a time.
However, you’ll need to send a detailed design brief to guide the team. There are no options to explore various concepts as in a design contest. If you’re unhappy with how a Kimp designer does your project, you’ll either have to wait on their revisions or start a new project.
2. What You Get

Every design or naming contest offers you a guaranteed minimum of entries. The higher the tier, the more concepts you’ll receive. (Note: designers may submit multiple concepts for your consideration.) All designs are 100% unique so you can be sure you have full use permissions once you select a winner.
Throughout the contest, you have the option to shortlist your favorite concepts and request tweaks. In fact, giving feedback is a vital part of the process. The creatives want to win the prize, so they’ll gladly refine their proof based on your comments!
Once you’ve awarded a winner, the design contest ends and the creative will upload the final artwork. All copyright transfers to you, so you can distribute and modify the design as you wish! You’ll get all editable files (vectors, PSD, etc.)
Hatchwise has assembled a large network of skilled designers and copywriters. This makes it easy to find the talent you need without wasting time browsing portfolios and reviewing proposals.
Plus, Hatchwise offers a support team and transparent pricing. It’s simple and straightforward so you can focus your energy on reviewing the concepts.

Kimp offers a range of graphic design and video work, from display ads and infographics to PowerPoints and pitch decks. (However, it does not offer web or app design.) For your monthly subscription fee, you can request as many projects as you’d like. You can only have two active projects at a time, though, and each project has at least a 24-hour turnaround. The Kimp team will manage your projects for you via Trello and Zapier.
Essentially, Kimp is a graphic and video design outsourcing platform. If you have a clear idea of what you need, Kimp’s team will handle it for you. Crowdsourcing or working on multiple concepts simultaneously do not happen in this business model.
3. What It Costs

Contest prices vary depending on what you’d like to be designed. The logo contests start at $89, which gets you a guaranteed minimum of 30 concepts from at least 5 creatives, or your money back. Higher-tier contests have even higher minimums.

Kimp does not have multiple tiers or upgrade options. They offer only three plans: Graphics, starting at $499/month, Video, starting at $599/month, and Graphics + Video, starting at $895/month. There is no contract, so you can cancel at any time. However, the basic subscription fee is a set monthly price, and it only covers approximately 1 project per business day. You will have to add subscriptions to get more work in less time.
The Final Verdict
Kimp and Hatchwise ultimately provide similar services (Kimp, however, does not offer web design or naming services) However, they have quite different business models. Both allow you to outsource your design tasks, but Hatchwise offers true crowdsourcing on an as-needed basis, while Kimp connects you to a few dedicated designers every month.
Kimp is ultimately more expensive in terms of the dollar amount, although it does cover a month’s worth of projects. However, Hatchwise charges per contest, meaning you can invest more in certain projects if you desire. You will also get many more concepts to consider for a single price, unlike in a subscription-based service where each project is part of the overall sum.
If you want to get the absolute best designs through competition, Hatchwise is ideal — especially if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want.
If you need a lot of work done but don’t necessarily need multiple rounds of revisions (or any naming or web design), choose Kimp.
Both Kimp and Hatchwise could be useful for your business, depending on your overall budget and what you need done. That said, there’s nothing like a crowdsourced creative agency to connect you with a large pool of talent.
