Nebraska’s scenery may be full of farmlands, prairies, flat land, and lots of corn, but on the business front, there is no shortage of good ideas coming out of this state. Kool-Aid was invented there, Nelnet is based there, and TD Ameritrade operates out of Nebraska’s capital, Omaha. With so many brands calling Nebraska “home,” there’s something in the Nebraska water that we also want a taste of. Below are three more Nebraska-based companies where we can learn a little something about how they have thought about their brand’s logo design. 

Omaha Steaks

Before Omaha Steaks was formally established in 1917, the Simon family had a background working as butchers after coming to America from Latvia. After learning their skills at various butchers across the meat packing industry, the father and son decided to open their own meat packing business, which we know today as Omaha Steaks. With headquarters in Omaha Nebraska, Omaha Steaks has established itself as a leading retailer of prime cuts of meat. Over the years, Omaha Steaks has expanded its product line and distributes meats beyond steak, seafood, sides, desserts, and other prepared foods. If you don’t live near one of the nearly 50 Omaha Steaks retail locations, you can order the brand’s products directly online. 

The Omaha Steaks logo has kept the same burgundy color scheme since 1995. This color choice is significant to the brand because it represents the coloring of Omaha Steak’s fine cuts of steak. Red also signifies power which is significant to Omaha Steaks because as the logo says, the brand was “America’s Original Butcher” and has been servicing its customers “since 1917,” symbolizing the brand’s longstanding reputation and power in this industry. The wordmark itself resembles a stamp, representing the Omaha Steaks stamp of approval on all the brand’s products. 

Cabela’s

For a store that rivals Bass Pro Shops, look no further than Cabela’s. This rivalry makes sense though because Cabela’s has been owned by Bass Pro Shops since 2017, so whatever competition is had between the stores is a friendly one that mutually benefits both brands. Founded in 1961 in Chappell, Nebraska, the store’s headquarters today can be found in Sidney. With 82 locations across North America, Cabela’s has become a premier retailer of hunting, fishing, boating, camping, shooting, and other outdoor activity apparel and merchandise. 

Despite Bass Pro Shops being Cabela’s parent company, the two brands have drastically different logo designs. Cabela’s logo features a simple yellow wordmark in cursive lettering. The logo is yellow, representing the sun, and the wordmark can sometimes be placed on top of a forest (or army) green background, representing the great outdoors. The font choice is relevant because cursive is a timeless font style that represents the timelessness of the outdoor sporting equipment and apparel Cabela’s sells. 

Berkshire Hathaway

One of the leading holding companies in the States is Berkshire Hathaway, whose headquarters can be found in Omaha, Nebraska. While Berkshire Hathaway has its hands in many things, the brand’s top source of capital lies in insurance. The companies that Berkshire Hathaway owns a stake in ranges from GEICO to Kraft Heinz, to Cola-Cola, Pilot Flying J, American Express, Apple and so much more. Given the size of Berkshire Hathaway, the brand is impactful on the stock market (being the seventh largest component of the S&P 500 index), is the top-ranked company on Forbes Global 2000 list, and is one of the largest employers in the United States. 

With so many industries under the Berkshire Hathaway umbrella, it became important to the brand to have a logo that would translate across industries. The result was a simple wordmark displaying the brand name in clean, classic lettering. With Berkshire Hathaway being focused on investments, it is important to have a corporate, professional, and clean logo which the brand does. This logo’s simplicity helps to convey that with Berkshire Hathaway you are only getting the most professional and high-quality service.
