What most of us associate Mississippi with is the longest river in America, but this Southern state has much more brewing behind state lines. Not only is Mississippi home to some of our favorite celebrities (such as Oprah, Elvis, and Britney Spears to name a few), but Mississippi is also known for its abundance of blues and bluegrass music, southern hospitality, and authentic cuisine like fried catfish, collard greens, boiled peanuts and so much more.

With so much coming out of Mississippi, it makes sense to look at some of Mississippi’s most famous logos to see what has worked for businesses operating in this Southern state.

Back Yard Burgers

One of Mississippi’s claims to fast-food fame is Back Yard Burgers. Founded in 1987 in Cleveland, Mississippi, Back Yard Burgers has grown to become a regional franchise in the States. Even though the Back Yard Burgers’ headquarters has moved to Nashville, the chain hasn’t forgotten the state where it was founded. Today, Back Yard Burgers has 15 locations across the Southern and Midwestern states and employs 2,200 people. When you visit Back Yard Burgers, you can expect to find anything from a classic burger to a specialty burger (like a mac n cheese or black & bleu burger), to chicken sandwiches, to hot dogs, to chili, to everything else in between.

The Back Yard Burgers logo is a classic logo that depicts the essence of the brand. The wordmark is broken up to clearly show the three different words making up the brand name. In between “Back” and “Yard” sits a flame, representing the open flame that Back Yard Burgers’ items are cooked on. The brand focuses on simple design elements, only including one symbol to highlight what type of food this chain delivers to its customers.

Sanderson Farms

Sanderson Farms is one of the largest employers in Mississippi, employing more than 17,600 people. Sanderson Farms is a poultry farm establishment that is credited with producing more than 13.5 million chickens each week. With that high of production numbers, it is no surprise that this farm is the third largest poultry farmer in the States. Sanderson Farms was founded in 1947, becoming incorporated in 1955 and later becoming a publicly traded company in 1987. Its headquarters can be found in Laurel, Mississippi and today, Sanderson Farms can be found under the name Wayne-Sanderson Farms after a merger with Wayne Farms.

Sanderson Farms' logo resembles other commercial farm logos found in grocers. The logo is a simple wordmark that sits in a simple symbol. The letters are similar to Times New Roman, a classic font representing the timelessness of the farm. The color choices are where the company became creative. Green is commonly associated with agriculture and farming, representing the high quality of Sanderson Farms. Accompanied by yellow, the logo conveys friendliness, energy, and positivity.

Peavey Electronics

Headquartered in Meridian, Mississippi is an electronics company, Peavey Electronics. Founded in 1965, the company has grown to employ nearly 2,500 employees. Even with a smaller employee base, Peavey Electronics is credited with being one of the largest audio equipment manufacturers not only across the States but also across the world.

Like other logos from Mississippi, Peavey turned to its font choice for creativity with its logo design. The font features sharp, angular letters. The logo font looks digitized while resembling other logos in this space. By creating a unique, yet similar font, it becomes clear what industry Peavey Electronics operates in.
