Famous Logos from Indiana

Indiana, also known as the “land of the Indians”, is a Midwestern state with the 17th highest population in the nation. While on the surface it simply seems like a landlocked state of basic origins, Indiana has plenty to offer, from beaches to caves to state parks.

Hoosier hospitality and low taxes are just a couple of reasons that businesses love to get their start in Indiana. Giants such as Kock Enterprises, Anthem, Berry Global, Corteva, and Masterbrand are proud to call Indiana home.

Cummins

The Cummins logo has changed drastically since the company began in 1919. The first iteration was involved, wordy, but very artistic, featuring an O-shaped center frame flanked by the word Cummins on the left and Oil Engine on the right. It resembled an engraved plaque and was meant to show strength and purpose.

It took a sharp adjustment in 1944 when the designers moved from the classic look to a more contemporary style involving lots of black, white, and red in the color scheme. Many of the products during the late 40s and early 50s are resemblant of the same style. It was considered laconic, and the logo failed to inspire.

These days, the trademark “C” is easily recognizable and linked in the minds of Cummins engine appreciators as the symbol of power and reliability.

Lilly

Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals was started in 1876 by Colonel Eli Lilly, a veteran of the civil war, and the logo is a digital rendering of his signature. To maintain a consistent and reliable foothold in the pharma market, the logo hasn’t changed in decades. No one knows how long this specific design has been around.

It shows a strong connection to its humble origins. It lets the customer know that the company has a vibrant steadfast heritage of loyalty and honor and that the Lilly company will always be about dedication to the consumer.

The deep red shade chosen for the font of the logo is said to be calming, while also letting the consumer know that the company loves and cares for them.

Steak N Shake

Founded in 1934 by Gus Belt, a Marine Corp vet, Steak N Shake has maintained the same logo since its inception. Gus converted a fuel station and chicken shack into the burger joint we know and love today, making to logo obvious to anyone wondering exactly what was served in the new restaurant.

85 years later, the company remains a beacon of its heritage. The term “steak” in the logo stood for steakburgers which, just to prove the meat was top shelf and very fresh, Gus himself would grind it in front of customers, then make patties for grilling. The “shake” in the logo stood for milkshakes, hand-dipped and available in numerous flavors.
