On March 12, 1959, Congress approved Hawaii for admission to the union. This 50th state is not just the only U.S. state outside North America, but it is also the only state that is an archipelago (a cluster of islands).

Hawaiian AirlinesIf you travel to Hawaii, you’ll see the logo for Hawaiian Airlines more than once. This airline is the largest airline in the state that services passengers from Hawaii to the United States, and from Hawaii to international countries. Founded in 1929, the airline has grown to become the 10th largest commercial airline in America and is based in Honolulu, Hawaii.
With Hawaiian Airlines’ logo design, the company focused on what sets their airline apart, the airline’s warmth, care, and generosity. The logo features a woman, named Pualani, who is intentionally positioned looking to the left, symbolizing Pualani watching over every passenger and crew member. For Hawaiian Airlines, choosing a logo that is representative of the Hawaiian culture was important and with this logo design, the brand was able to do just that.
Kona Brewing CompanyLocated in Kailua-Kona is Kona Brewing Company. Founded in 1994 by a father and son team, the brewery is now owned by PV Brewing Partners, LLC. Despite scaling up to distribute its beer to 36 states and 10 countries, Kona Brewing Company has stayed humble and focused on the brewery’s Hawaiian roots. Kona Brewing Company doesn’t specialize in only one type of craft beer. The brand brews a variety of beers from blonde and golden ales to lagers, to IPAs.
In crafting Kona Brewing Company’s logo, it was important to keep it local, like the beer. The logo is printed in warm, welcoming colors, and at either end of the border is a design that resembles a local tribal tattoo. Sitting in the middle of the logo is a gecko which is commonly found around the Big Island. Every component of the logo was thoughtfully included to represent the brewery’s Hawaiian roots.
First Hawaiian BankHeadquartered in Honolulu is First Hawaiian Bank. First Hawaiian Bank is credited with being the largest bank across the state offering personal, private, and corporate banking services. Founded in 1858, this bank is the oldest bank on the island and has grown to include 57 branch locations across Hawaii.
With logos in the financial services industry, it can be hard to infuse logos with personality, but First Hawaiian Bank was able to do that. The font choice for the wordmark is a corporate, professional font often found in this industry, however, there is an emblem to the left of the wordmark. This emblem ties back to Hawaiian heritage, representing the feathered helmets formally worn by Hawaiian chiefs, called mahioles. This addition to the logo helps the bank stand out from other banks across the state.
