Famous Logos in Baseball Major League Baseball is a league split into two conferences with a combined 30 teams. They play 162 games a year, 81 at home and 81 away. Teams have a 40-player roster, each calling an iconic ballpark home. That’s a lot of time spent each year wearing logos! Baseball is unique to other American sports in that it has a chunk of the annual sports calendar where it dominates the nation’s attention (and TV schedule). It’s rooted deep in our history and has given us some unforgettable logos to wear.
The New York Yankees Arguably the most iconic sports franchise in the world, the New York Yankees have had the same thin white or navy-lettered “NY” logo on their uniforms and caps throughout much of their history. In typical New York fashion, though, the interlocking NY was inspired by a design from Tiffany & Co. that was given to a police officer who received a Medal of Valor in 1877. By 1909 the Yankees had made the design their own, though, and it would be worn by many famous Bronx Bombers, including Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Derek Jeter, Reggie Jackson, Alex Rodriguez, and the Great Bambino himself, Babe Ruth. Combined with their minimalist yet brilliant, thin navy pinstripes (on white) home uniforms, the Yankees logo can be seen on many fans’ chests and heads worldwide.
The Los Angeles Dodgers Before their move to Los Angeles, the Brooklyn Dodgers were already a famous franchise but needed a move out of Brooklyn and a crumbling Ebbets Field. However, sunny Los Angeles proved to be an exciting proposition, and in 1958 they completed the move before finally moving to Dodger Stadium in 1962. While the interlocking LA logo can be seen everywhere, the Dodger script remains unique and traditional. It was designed in 1939 (back in Brooklyn), but fans of the team say that today the iconic blue color is reminiscent of a crisp blue-sky Los Angelinos enjoy on yet another hot, sweltering LA summer’s day.
The Milwaukee Brewers While not among the most widely supported teams, the Milwaukee Brewers have one of the more eye-catching logos in the Majors. On the face of it, the logo appears to be a glove catching a ball, but there is much more happening when we look at it more carefully. A keen eye will notice that the glove’s fingers appear like an ‘M’ and the offset thumb and ball make a lowercase ‘b.’ The cartoonishly bright blue and yellow are derived from a version of the city’s flag dubbed the People’s Flag of Milwaukee, which visitors to the Cream City will see on buildings, homes, and bars everywhere. Other fans say that the yellow on the logo recognizes Milwaukee’s two most famous culinary contributions - beer and cheese. And that makes sense to us!
