Executive summary<br /> The Psych NP Life is a social media &amp; internet presence created to inspire psychiatric nurse practitioners to think creatively and, ultimately, to elevate the practices of nursing and psychiatry.<br /> Background<br /> This project was inspired by 16 years as a grassroots nurse advocating for patients in various roles and my complicated journey to becoming a PMHNP (Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner). It is also inspired by my passion for community-building, nursing and the power of listening with compassion and presence. <br /> Problem statement<br /> The PMHNP profession lacks a unifying vision. I want to inspire greatness<br /> Proposed solution<br /> By posting my journey, solutions, resources and new findings, I will inspire and lead PMHNPs to higher levels and, in so doing, create inspired mental health care. <br /> KeyWords: diversity, creativity, vision, leadership, community, inspiration<br /> Sources of inspiration: mystical things like tarot cards, oracle cards, American folk art, Haitian art, the natural world, and science<br /> <br /> What is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner?<br /> Of the more than 290,000 Nurse Practitioners licensed in the United States (per the American Association of Nurse Practitioners), 1.8% are certified as Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners as their primary care focus. <br /> <br /> AANP explains that Psychiatric Mental Health NPs &ldquo;assess, diagnose and treat the mental health needs of patients.&rdquo; That generally involves providing therapy for those with mental health disorders&mdash;such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder or substance abuse disorders&mdash;and prescribing medications, and it could require PMHNPs to provide psychosocial assessments and emergency psychiatric care. You could work in your own private practice or in the hospital setting. <br />
