The Abacus Motel Mount Isa is a 30-room motel located in a mining community in outback Queensland. The landscape has strong rich colours – the striking red soil is rich with minerals and the countryside has rolling hills. The traditional owners are the Kalkadoon people. Outback north-western Queensland is a harsh environment with temperatures reaching 50 degrees C in summer. The motel offers a refuge from the harsh conditions after a day working in the mines, on cattle properties or travelling long distances.

The clientele include:
• Corporate travellers and workers supporting the nearby industries
• Travellers driving the long distances between Northern Territory and the major cities of Townsville and Brisbane.

The design should have the following

The design should highlight the property name “Abacus Motel” so that it is easily recognizable as a motel. It should have colours that stand out so that signage is easily seen from the road. The colours should reflect the environment of the arid outback (ochre & browns) or the mineral red in the soils. It should be simple. It should highlight that this is a welcome friendly reprieve from the harsh environment.
