This first day's set of entries are very exciting and good. I do recommend that designers think about innovative and visually striking ways to update the "grasping hands" design element from our old logo.

Some other members of our organization have had a chance to visit this site and take a look at some of what is developing. There seems to be a strong consensus developing AGAINST the use of "Hebrew-style" English lettering. This is not a criticism of any of you designers, at all -- you've done it as well as it can be done -- but a number of our board members feel it is unavoidably "kitschy." We definitely encourage designers to continue to think about innovative ways to update the "grasping hands" logo -- but we also encourage you to think about incorporating a tree (not just leaves, but an actual tree -- the Torah is also called Etz Chaim, a "Tree of Life," and our group are environmentally aware as well). This might be an alternative to the grasping hands, or perhaps they could be combined. Keep up the great work!

One of our Board members has commented, "I would like to see a design in which the Torah Scroll was inside the hands, not surrounding them, and either "NHC" or "National Havurah Committee" was written in a circle around the outside."

Would you consider using a tree that is all branches, no leaves? I was thinking of possibly going that direction but wanted to first find out if you'd be open to it.

Sure, go for it. Another idea I think would be interesting would be something built around the words "Havurah" in English and Hebrew -- the Hebrew letters for it are, from right to left, chet-vet-vav-resh-hey (looking at the old logo, along the top line, it is the first five Hebrew letters from left to right. "Havurah" is the strong and unique word in the organization's name, and some combination of the organization's entire name, and "havurah" in Hebrew (maybe on a scroll), might be another way to go (without or without the grasping hands).

חבורה Above is the Hebrew (in the only letter set that reproduces here) that I would like to see integrated in. It is the Hebrew for the word "Havurah," and our website is www.havurah.org -- that is the "strong" word in our name, in my view, and could be made central to the logo.
