I don't find the choice surprising at all. I'm not defending the choice nor endorsing it but merely stating a case. When you look at the community that this client is involved with, namely farming, you see several companies, past and present that have chosen this color scheme. The graphic is reminiscent of several farming related logotypes. Examples: International Harvester, Massey Ferguson, Spudnik, Alis Chalmers, Homelite, etc.

I'm not criticizing the choice but merely expressing a feeling. And yes, it was of much 'surprise'. Of course I understand that the client has his own choice and he gets to exercize it. No one is questioning that. On the other hand I'm not sold on the reasoning that this is "the logotype" for this industry. Far from it. If it's just the use of red & black that makes the link there, that's no link at all. And by same reasoning, thousands of other logos from the same industry that do not match this 'graphic' and are in fact diagonally opposite to this logotype are a stark reminder of the fact that in the world of design there are no longer any generic types.
