this will be an online directory for the home improvement industry. looking at the other contests that are being run, i'd figure i'd log in this morning and atleast see a couple of entries .. hmmm. mike

Mike, I think if you give a little more details about the nature of your business it might stimulate more ideas to begin designing from; it seems that there is some information lacking in your answers on the design brief. You say it's an online directory, but a directory of what exactly? I know it must have to do with home improvement of some kind, but if you can be more specific it would be helpful. You mentioned you didn't want hammers, nails, screwdrivers, etc., which is perfectly fine, but I'm not completely sure whether that's because they're trite/overused and you want something completely different, or is it because those items are totally irrelevant to the type of home improvement service you provide (perhaps you focus on interior design as opposed to construction, for example). Are you looking for a logo that includes an icon or are you interested in something more text-based? I am hesitant to begin designing a logo until I have a better idea of what the customer's specific needs are and what their company does, especially when the contest is not prepaid. Hopefully if you can give us some more info, you'll see the designs start coming in! Hope this helps.
