Improving Global Healthcare One Book at a Time

Describe your company and organization and target audience

Global Medical Libraries (GML) is a global initiative focused on improving the standard of healthcare in developing countries by providing donated medical educational resources, which contribute to advancing the quality of pre-service education.

Goal
Improve global healthcare one book at a time.

Objective
Global Medical Libraries will significantly enhance the initial and continuing medical education of healthcare professionals in communities crippled by the lack of materials, with which to teach, learn and provide healthcare of all kind, through donated medical education resources.

History
Global Medical Libraries is a re-branding of Operation Medical Libraries (OML) and will be launched on the project's 10th anniversary (4/4/17) OML, formerly known as Books without Borders, sent its first shipment to Iraq in 2007. In spring 2008, the name was changed due to a name conflict with an unrelated organization.

This project exists to shrink the educational gap in all areas of the health sciences in developing countries, which face the same problem: doctors and nurses go without the latest professional information they need to provide proper healthcare to their patients.

In response to this urgent demand for living saving knowledge, over the last decade the project has built a powerful collaboration between publishers, authors, universities and hospitals to provide formal medical references and continuing education materials for health sciences students and professionals living in the developing world.

Impact
Since the program’s inception in April 2007, over $2.5 million of health sciences (dentistry, nursing, and medical) textbooks have been donated to 24 countries: Afghanistan, Antiqua, Chad, China,Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Germany, Haiti, Iraq,Namibia, Malawi, Morocco-Western Sahara region, Mozambique, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Fiji, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands,South Sudan,Tanzania,
Turkey (Turkish Syrian Border), Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe

Target Audience:
Those who can donate health sciences textbooks, including professional graduate schools (MD/DO, DDS and RN); individual health sciences professionals, health sciences libraries, medical associations and medical book publishers.

The design should have the following

The project started as a result of an email sent by a US Army physician while she was deployed in Iraq. As such, the project has been in integrally linked to the US military. The books are sent directly to a US military or Department of State employee who, as part of his/her assignment, is serving in a medical advisory role for the local medical community and requested these educational resources. The books are donated from the book donor, who absorbs all the cost of shipping. There is no cost to the recipient or its government.

The "all American" color scheme of red, white and blue is part of this project's past and I would like it to continue it into its future.
