The color of the logo should work with the existing color scheme of the site: www.englishcompanion.ning.com

hi Jim, the site isn't working.. but i manage to get into your website at: http://www.englishcompanion.com/ by the way, whats with the "?" in "English Companion?" is that an alternative?

it's free to join englishcompanion.ning.com. If you do, just say you're an English teacher (not there to Sell Products). englishcompanion.com is my own personal site/commercial and, for now, separate site, though that may change. the "?" reflected my confusion over whether to suggest the logo name be one word (englishcompanion) or English Companion. I'm torn. It should probably be English Companion.

After looking at initial efforts, I realize that I would also want this logo to function in all black or white as a logo on certain docs (e.g., a pdf that would be downloaded and printed in black or on other document with dark cover. Thanks, everyone!

Someone I will be working with added the following info. Sorry if this complicates the contest. I would still want a colored version that matched the englishcompanion.ning.com site but that also does the following: 1. Black and white version. 2. "Flat" no 3D, shadows, or other FX. 3. Vectors only. No bitmaps. For logos, I work in Illustrator and InDesign CS5. I can do FX work in FireWorks and Photoshop but we give up some usability when we switch to a bitmapped environment.

Please don't take any silence on my part this weekend as anything more than being away with my family and having no access to view or respond. THank you!

tagline might be too long in my opinion

Apologies to all contestants who were waiting on feedback. I was away all weekend and only have a few minutes now to respond. The three leaders right now are: 230618, 230126, and 230121. WHy? They do not look commercial and suggest community, come closes to capturing the spirit of www.englishcompanion.ning.com. We still have some days. I hope to find a way to let the community on ECN vote if I can arrange that at all. Thanks for your continued efforts!

This is from someone I showed the current contest results to. I like what she has to say: I saw your logo options and wanted to offer a little comment, based on experience. There are going to be times when you need a squarish logo, such as for an avatar/profile pic or for an ad. I know you're not advertising right now, but you may be at some point. When you have the horizontally long kind of logo, you run into trouble in these circumstances. The words end up getting shrunken to the point they aren't legible. So my advice, from much experience, is to try to push the designers toward a more squarish logo if at all possible. The ReadWriteThink logo has this problem. It's too long for some uses. They have managed to solve the problem recently by making a second logo that stacks the words horizontally. Compare the long one (http://www.readwritethink.org/images/logo.gif) to the one I used for the RWT group on the ECNing (http://englishcompanion.ning.com/group/readwritethink). NCTE's Centennial log has the same problem. If you go with something long horizontally, you may want to also make an more vertical variant while you have access to the designer. The long ones are great for letterhead, but there are times when they aren't optimal online.

Here is another comment from one of my advisors to the site: Of the green ones, I guess I like 230089 best. It's not as traditional a representation of the 'teacher'. Sure wish we could get a writing icon in there. ;-) And some more energy! The blue star one is actually the most appealing in its feel. The emphasis is on the people, joining together, not what an English teacher is or does. But if you go with a blue one, I think you'll need to change the colors of the Ning.

I have to travel out of town but will do my best to check on the contest. I return Sunday and will choose the winner that day, but the rankings above are revised with my latest opinion. I am very grateful for everyone's efforts. You have all done such interesting work.
