The 2014 Mayor's Food Summit is an event that will be held in May 2014. The event is being coordinated by a committee of community leaders. This event is designed to call attention to the fact that many Wyandotte County residents do not have access to healthy foods. Some of the barriers experienced by residents include a lack of financial resources, geographical location, lack of nutritional education, and a general lack of health resources. There are several local nonprofits that are already working to address this issue by providing services, but a shift in overall policy will be needed to create true change and improvement of the health of our residents. Wyandotte County is ranked as the least healthy in the state, as indicated by things like the frequency of heart disease and diabetes. The target audience for this event are our political, educational, civic and business leaders.
