ADAPT (After Deployment Adaptive Parenting Tools) is a parenting program that has been shown to be helpful for military families following deployment. It is based on PMTO, a parenting program that has been around for many years and is shown to be effective. We are making ADAPT available to a non-military audience - basically any families that have experienced stress and have children between the ages of 5-12. We help parents identify their values and goals and then teach skills and work with their needs to help them live their values and work towards their goals. In addition to more general parenting skills, we focus on encouragement, present moment awareness, emotion regulation, and teaching parents to teach their kids about emotions and dealing with problems. This is considered a prevention program in that we are helping parents to teach their children when the kids are young in the hope of preventing behavior problems as the kids get into their teenage years.
